Mr. Blackwell stylish for Waterloo in historic Mon-Clair League win

COLUMBIA •  Waterloo Millers manager Vern Moehrs has had a lot of great players in his 50-plus years at the helm, with high school and college standouts who move to the Mon-Clair League and have helped Waterloo claim 39 division titles and 24 league championships.

But there has never been a more successful pitcher than Corey Blackwell.

The Millers’ ace struck out nine and gave up just three hits on Sunday, going the distance to beat Columbia 2-0 and become Waterloo’s all-time wins leader with victory No. 115.

“It is a long time and a lot of hard work,” Moehrs said. “It is a lot of dedication. He has an awful lot of tenacity to always come out and pitch. I think it is a milestone for any sandlot player to do what he has done, after competing against all these great players over the years.” 

Blackwell was as methodical as ever, going through his routines between innings and firing strikes from the hill in the brutal heat, urging his teammates to wake up the bats.

It wasn’t until victory was secure that he let himself dwell on his accomplishment.

“It means a lot to me because Vern has had some very good pitchers come through here,” Blackwell said. “John Adamson won 114 games and there aren’t many people in the league who stick around to win that many. 

“I tried not to think about it too much today, it was just another game, but it is a nice honor to have.” 

Fellow pitcher Brandon Waeltz has been with Waterloo since 2001 and has seen countless Blackwell masterpieces from the bullpen.

He also knows what it takes to hit the mound game after game and excel.

“Corey has been one of the biggest competitors in the league,” Waeltz said. “He has got a drive to win and obviously still has the ability. He has been consistent and has been able to throw strikes, able to control a game.” 

And he has kept at it all these years, while competitors’ arms have turned to rubber or guys have lost their passion for the sport.

“It is just a love of the game more than anything,” Blackwell said. “I just want to go out there and compete. When you have played ball since you could walk, you want to just keep playing. I have had good mechanics and that has helped keep me playing.” 

Mon-Clair baseball isn’t the same as beer league softball, where you can dig in the back of your closet for your stiffened glove every May and take the diamond. There are tremendous hitters all across the circuit who will jump on the slightest mistake pitch and crush it.
