Moonlit scene is set for a grunion run

If you happen to visit a sandy beach along the Central Coast at night after a full or new moon and immediately after high tide, you may see a spectacle that you’re unlikely to ever forget.

Like sea turtles, California grunion, slender, silvery, turquoise fish about 5 to 7 inches long, come ashore at night in the open air to lay their eggs near the high water mark. Spawning generally occurs during the spring and summer, peaking in May and June.

Wet, wacky spring one for the record books

The weather this spring has been an anomaly. Rain and snow in California this June, historic floods along the Mississippi River, blistering heat waves and monster tornado outbreaks east of the Rockies have made this season one for the record books.

On Tuesday, the temperature reached 103 degrees at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. This shattered the old record of 95 degrees set in 2004. Flooding on the Mississippi River reached levels not seen since 1927, with thousands of acres of farmland still underwater. Tornadoes have killed hundreds this spring, with Missouri and North Carolina especially hard hit.

Last weekend, 1.05 inches of rain fell at Cal Poly, where official records for San Luis Obispo are kept. That breaks the previous rainfall record total of .80, set in June of 1991. Rocky Butte near San Simeon recorded nearly 4 inches of rain last weekend!

Winds bring allergens, and that means hay fever

It started out as a usual Mother’s Day. My family and I headed out of Los Osos to San Luis Obispo and then out of nowhere, “Achoo!” My wife started sneezing and developed itchy eyes before we merged onto Highway 101.

Like so many others, she suffers from hay fever. The number of people affected is staggering — doctors estimate between 10 percent and 30 percent of the adult population has hay fever, with the numbers even higher in children.

The medical community will tell you hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis, or SAR, is the correct term because hay is not usually the problem) is frequently caused by pollen.

Pattern gives way to wacky weather

Driving in the rain to Paso Robles on Saturday to participate in the 2011 Endeavour Institute STEM Education (science, technology, engineering and math) Balloon Fest at Tobin James Cellars, I kept thinking how out of whack our weather seems to be lately.

These students from the North County had to release their tethered balloons with their payload of science experiments in the rain. Normally at this time of the year, the North County would be clear and dry with temperatures well in the 80s or even the 90s.

Morro Bay Pier is reputed as a hot spot for a varied number of fishes such as rockfish, sharks, rays, halibut, sardines, sole, flounder and mackerel. Night fishing is a favorite activity among the locals and the tourists. There are mainly 2 piers here: north and south.

The ranch is privately owned and has its own fish pond teeming with fish. Kayaking is allowed in the fish pond.
