The Big Picture

It’s Father’s Day today, and while you could honor the Big Guy with a fancy brunch or the latest snazzy gadget, why not celebrate the true Dad spirit with a last-minute shopping spree at one of one San Diego’s longest-running garage sales? We are talking about Kobey’s Swap Meet, where the availability of cheap auto parts, socks and one-pound hamburgers make it one of the most Dad-friendly shopping spots in town. And besides, nothing says, “We love you, Pops!” like pickle-flavored Pringles you bought in a parking lot.

Cheap Dad

He would probably prefer you call him “Thrifty Dad,” but once you hook him up with bargain swag from the sprawling Dollar Store booths, you can call him anything you want. The $1 selections include work gloves, reusable shopping bags, knives and five noisy “party snaps,” which will make him feel like a cap-gun firing hooligan again.

If you’re feeling fancy, you can go for the $2 leather (leatherish?) Nano case or the Wonder Peeler Kitchen Magician, an “As seen on TV” classic for $3.

Outlaw Dad

If Dad always wanted a secret identity, buy him one of vendor Howard Aguirre’s Mexican wrestling masks ($10 to $15, Row D) and call him “El Gato Numero Uno.” Then you can send El Gato after the vendors who are selling Excedrin sinus pills that expired in 2007.

For the guy with the “Gunsmoke” fetish, leather-vendor John McCloud (Row C, or thereabouts) has some impressively tooled Wrangler belts for $20. If Dad’s fightin’ days are behind him, McCloud also sells extra-soft diabetic socks — three pairs for $4.99.

Alterna-Dad

Does he answer to “Daddy-O?” Then you’ll want to shop at the F-row booth run by Vanessa Weiss and Anthony Aglugub, where everything is cheap ($5 or under) and some things are funky-chic. That includes pre-worn Levis and Doc Martens; Pendleton shirts; many record albums (Oscar Peterson Trio, Merle Haggard, the Ohio Players and KISS); and enough copies of Dragon magazine to keep him busy until Comic-Con. Look for the Motorhead bathing trunks and a Chihuahua named Violet.
