Opinion: Thoughts from a power outage
Power outages are nature's way of telling you it's time to clean your freezer.
That was one of the lessons learned when our Dickinson Township neighborhood lost its electricity for three days after last Thursday's violent storm rolled through.
I thought we'd be OK if we just didn't open the freezer door, but in the middle of second day the refrigerator began drooling purple goo out the bottom - indicating that the half-gallon of cherry ice-cream in the freezer had melted.
So we cleaned everything out and discovered foods with "sell by" dates back in the mid-2000s.
I guess you could count that as a positive effect of the storm and outage. Having our car's rear window punched out by a falling tree limb was a definite negative.
You learn all kinds of things during power outages - some good, some bad, some merely interesting. You certainly have plenty of time to notice and think about stuff since you can't do normal things like watch TV, surf the Internet, make coffee or take a shower (if, like us, you have a well with an electric pump).
Here are a few of them:
1. The electric company has to stop issuing bogus notifications about when power will be restored. When the electricity went out about 5:30 on Thursday night, we called PPL and were told it would be back by 11 p.m. Then it was 7:30 the next morning; then 4 p.m.; then another time and another time and another time. Our neighbors were receiving cellphone alerts with the same completely inaccurate information.
Sure, I understand that there was a lot of damage and that repairs take time - but it would have been far better for the company to simply say, "We don't know." By stating specific times, PPL not only raised false hopes but made it much harder to plan. Like whether to eat the ice cream.
In fact, when a PPL manager finally arrived on the scene of the damage that took out power in our neighborhood (an uprooted spruce pulled down the wires between two poles), he said the No. 1 complaint he'd heard from customers all over the Carlisle area concerned the inaccurate information about when service would be restored. He urged us to call and complain about that specifically.
2. On the other hand, the repair crews, including that manager, were terrific. They patiently answered all our questions and worked hard and efficiently to fix the problem.
And several of them mentioned how patient and polite local residents were as they coped with the lengthy outage. One told me that he had been "down South" recently repairing storm damage, and that people there were angry and rude.
Gas Refrigerator Repair - News
I understand that some people, especially those with kids, wanted to keep some lights running or the refrigerator working. Still, the coughing drone of gas engines was an unwelcome intrusion. 4. Speaking of lights, we discovered that those
The home, built in the 1940s needed work apart from the repairs caused by the accident. Cheryl said it needed new wiring and new windows. While the work was being done, the family opened up the living/dining/kitchen area. The new refrigerator and

Put another way; your personal smart phone uses far more electricity than the refrigerator in your kitchen. This is your pro-rata annual allocation of energy in the entire infrastructure needed to make, store and transport your gigabytes.
Avoid opening a refrigerator unnecessarily during outages, so food lasts longer. - Be sure to have a non-electric can opener. - If the home has an electric water pump, always keep an emergency supply of bottled water on hand for drinking and washing.
Government is no different than the food in a refrigerator. Given enough time both will go bad. The smartest person I knew in this life was my mother. Perhaps that is true of all of us. Maybe I just got lucky. She was a nurse by trade.
