Clarence Clemons: Remembering the 'Big Man' at home on Singer Island

Clarence Clemons first started showing up regularly on the Palm Beach County scene in the 1990s, though he had been frequenting South Florida for decades to bask in the sun and fun.

The iconic saxophonist of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street band once owned a West Palm Beach condo on Olive Avenue before settling into a serene, Zen-like, 18th-story pad in a Singer Island condominium, which is where he had the stroke that led to his death on Saturday night at age 69.

The Big Man gave generously of his time, performing at countless local charities. His side bands performed here, including a memorable night at 251 Sunrise in Palm Beach, where The Boss jumped up and sang oldies with Clemons’ group. Over the years, he performed everywhere from Moroso Speedway to Christine’s in Jupiter to the John Bull Pub in West Palm Beach, in addition to frequenting Heat and Marlins games.

He also spoke frequently to The Palm Beach Post over the years, talking about his music, his tours, his autobiography, his health problems (bad back, double-knee surgery, a heart attack), and his love of the home he made on Singer Island with his wife, Victoria.

Here he is, in his own words:

ON LIFE ON SINGER ISLAND: “Most people like to go out, but my life is ‘out.’ My life is a party. So having fun for me is staying at home and enjoying my life. I’m happy to be home, to sleep in my own bed, cook my own food. For me, that’s a treasure.” (2009)

ON MEETING HIS FIFTH WIFE, VICTORIA, AT AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT IN CALIFORNIA, WHERE HE COURTED HER WITH WHITE ROSES AND BOUQUETS DAILY: “When I first saw her, and she walked away from me, I knew she was the one. She was so graceful; she walks like an angel. She’s been a blessing. I’ve been through so much and she’s been beside me.” (2009)

ON NO LONGER USING DRUGS: “There comes a point in life where you want to see the real you. It’s not that drugs made me a bad person. I just don’t do it anymore. Now I can move past it, and see my life a lot clearer. Maybe my fans can see that and understand it .” (2009)

ON THE ICONIC COVER OF ‘BORN TO RUN’: “I set the pose up. I stood up and struck a pose, and Bruce leaned in on me. And it was perfect. (But) It’s kind of been a nemesis. My face was on the back. Why not on the front? What’s up with that? My mom was apprehensive about me going into rock and roll. I had a strict religious background and here I was leaving my job and family to follow this dream. She always said, ‘Keep your day job.’ So finally Born to Run comes out and it’s huge, and I showed it to my mom and she said, ‘Your behind’s on the cover!
