Green Bay Packers receiver Super Bowl rings in private ceremony

The Green Bay Packers got their Super Bowl rings in a private ceremony at Lambeau Field on Thursday.

Contact between players and teams is prohibited during the NFL lockout, but the Packers received special permission from the league.

Green Bay beat Pittsburgh 31-25 in the Super Bowl on Feb. 6.

The rings feature a Packers "G" logo with 13 diamonds to symbolize each of the team's titles. Surrounding it are four more diamonds to symbolize its four Super Bowl wins.

Tennis

Venus Williams lost to Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, exiting Eastbourne (England) a day after Serena lost in a Wimbledon tune-up. Both sisters are back after lengthy injury breaks. In men's play, Janko Tipsarevic beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 7-6 (2). "... Roberta Vinci beat Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 6-4 in a women's quarterfinals of the Unicef Open in rain-plagued Den Bosch, Netherlands. In the only men's quarterfinal to finish, Ivan Dodig beat Teymuraz Gabashvili 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Cycling

Juan Mauricio Soler was hospitalized after a crash during the Tour of Switzerland. The 28-year-old has bleeding on the brain, multiple fractures and hematomas, his Movistar team said. Soler had been in second place overall. The accident came seven miles into the 98-mile stage that ended in Liechtenstein. Soler was airlifted to a hospital in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and is in stable condition. Movistar said Soler may have hit a curb, flown over his handlebars and hit a pole or fence. Steven Kruijswijk won the sixth stage, nine seconds ahead of Levi Leipheimer. Overall leader Damiano Cunego was third.

Soccer

Germany coach Joachim Loew announced captain Michael Ballack is no longer needed in the national team. Ballack was invited to play Aug. 10 against Brazil in a farewell match.

Horse racing

Animal Kingdom has a small fracture to the cannon bone in his left hind leg that will keep the Kentucky Derby winner out for a few weeks. The colt finished sixth in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. Animal Kingdom was bumped at the start by Isn't He Perfect and nearly fell.

Golf

The Heritage Classic said RBC will serve as its new title sponsor, ensuring the PGA Tour will make its annual stop at Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island, S.C., for the next five years. The inaugural event was in 1969.
