Longest Lunar Eclipse In Over Ten Years Wednesday

In this March 4,2007 file photo showing a full moon is eclipsed by the earth's shadow in this seven pictures combination, from left, seen in Nairobi, Kenya. Mark your calendars. This year's first total eclipse of the moon will last unusually long, a rare celestial treat for a wide swath of the globe. Except if you're in the United States and Canada. But if you're in eastern Africa, central Asia, Middle East and western Australia, you should be able to view the entire lunar spectacle if the weather cooperates. The first of the two lunar eclipses of 2011 will be on Wednesday, June 15th and will be visible from the Middle East, Asia and Europe to Africa and Australia. It will not be able to be seen from North America. The lunar eclipse will occur during the full moon phase, which will start at 1:27 p.m. EDT and end at 7 p.m. EDT.

During a lunar eclipse, the earth acts like a blanket between the sun and the moon. This blocks the sun’s rays from hitting the moon and the eclipse takes place. For this to happen the sun, moon and earth have to be perfectly aligned. Compared to a solar eclipse that is only a few minutes long, a lunar eclipse can last hours and can be seen from the night side of the Earth.

Only 35 percent of the eclipses are total and are very extraordinary, whereas the penumbral are hard to detect even with the aid of a telescope occur 35 percent of the time. Partial eclipses happen 30 percent of time and are easy to see with the plain eye.

According to National Geographic , the last lunar eclipse occurred on December 21, 2010.  The moon began darkening at around 1 a.m. and by 2:40 a.m. was completely covered. The total phase or totality lasted about 70 minutes and the whole passage lasted for about three and a half hours. The last long lunar eclipse was in July of 2000 where the total darkness lasted about 100 minutes.

Since the earth will filter all blue tones during the eclipse, the moon will appear in dark copper and red tones. Viewers are able to watch the eclipse either with binoculars or plain eyes.

The second total eclipse in December will be viewable in the United States and Canada.

controcisupp: moon phases in order

Update: Thank you everyone who has contributed since July 2 when we announced the drive. Our total contributions from paypal and google are around $2,500 till now (despite having 15 k members). As you can understand this is hardly of any significance for even a small legal effort. A big lawsuit is out of question. Thus IV core will use it for IV activities to further pursue its advocacy efforts. IV encourages its members being a plaintiffs with AILF if they so desire. If you are an IV member and also a plaintiff, you can let us know for any guidance we can provide. IV will be coming up with more direction to its members soon. We will have some plan for everyone and will need participation from everyone. Please stay tuned. Do you have attorney? It will be better if he/she write letter for status of the case. I had RFE in last year (around summer'09). My PD was current since Aug, but no change in the status or specific response (tried congressman, senator, SR). But, I got new RFE (medical report required) when my attorney contacted them. I don't know what triggered it, but my attorney contacted USCIS last (after I did not get any specific info from other sources). I applied my I485 in April 2007 (PD-July 2002, RD-April 23, 2007) and there has been no update (LUDs) on my application even after FP in May 2007. I called up NSC in Nov 2007 and they confirmed that FPs are OK and it is OK to have no LUDs after FP. Since then, it is a waiting game. Till Feb, i was told that my app is under security review (although my spouse's review was complete). After the USCIS's memo in Feb, there is no update either. My attorney has opened an SR with NSC on may 8th and they acknowledged that my app is outside the normal processing time. To all those who are screaming and shouting about "IV collecting Donations and doing nothing", I am not a donor myself, but we have to understand that IV IS THE ONLY platform we (EB community) have. However shaky or small the platform is. It takes a different kind of person to doggedly keep at something as insipid and difficult and immigration relief for EB and to put up with all the brickbats that armchair immigration proponents and to be beneficiaries like us throw at the IV core. $25 a month is reasonable. What people want it GC in $25 in less than 6 months. Somehow these same guys do not mind paying lawyers $700 for EAD filing which they could do themselves.
