Manatee sighting in Garden City area

For the third time this month, a manatee was found along the Grand Strand.

Nicole Adimey, with United States Fish and Wildlife, said his office in Jacksonville, North Carolina was contacted by the Department of South Carolina Natural Resources on Wednesday.

Adimey said they said a manatee was trapped in a culvert near Vista Drive and Ocean Boulevard, just south of Surfside Beach.

Adimey and manatee rescue team will make a trip to the Grand Strand to help the manatee, when they received a follow-up call DNR that the manatee was not in the culvert.

Mantee are aquatic mammals that feed on aquatic plants and vegetation. They are gentle creatures. Because they are slow, they are often injured by passing boats.

Joe Ard, with SCDNR said they believe a full moon high tide allowed the manatee to enter the culvert. It may have been the same tide that helped get the manatee back.

Ard said it is illegal to feed or touch a manatee.

There is no confirmation on whether it is the same as the manatee was first observed on August 3 off the coast of Myrtle Beach. DNR said they also received a report of an observation on August 10.

It is not uncommon for manatees to make their way north of our area, but it is not common. According to Save the club Mantee, "Manatees can be found in shallow water, slow rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals and coastal -. Especially when the grass or vegetation of freshwater s' flourish Manatees are a migratory species in the kingdom. States are concentrated in Florida during the winter. In the summer months, they can be found as far west as Texas and as far north as Massachusetts, but the observations were in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina are more common."
