Holocaust orphan keeps family's memory aflame in new memoir
A memoir, by its very definition, should take a lifetime to fill.
Judith Alter Kallman's childhood was a lifetime unto itself, however.
Filling its chapters are anecdotes of despair, resilience and love for a mother and father she barely knew.
The youngest of six children born to Jewish parents in what was then Czechoslovakia, Kallman witnessed helplessly as her family was torn apart by the Gestapo.
Her parents, sister and brother were herded by the Nazis and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, where an estimated 2.5 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust.
The year was 1942, and Kallman was just 4 years old.
"A soldier came and put a gun to my head. He said, `If you don't stop screaming, I'm going to throw you over there, too," Kallman said during a recent interview at her Greenwich home.
A member Temple Sholom who is a close friend and "matriarch" of the orthodox Jewish congregation Chabad Lubavitch of Greenwich, Kallman is sharing her story of growing up an orphan in a new memoir called "A Candle in the Heart."
The 322-page tome, which includes introductions from U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Rabbi Marvin Hier , founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center , is scheduled to go on sale on Amazon.com later this month.
"I wrote this book because I'm a voice that didn't die," Kallman said. "This is a child's story."
The town's rabbinical fraternity is hailing Kallman, who is on the board of the UJA Federation of Greenwich, for her efforts to keep the flame of survival alive.
"The message of the Holocaust can sometimes fall on deaf ears amongst the youth in our community," said Rabbi Yossi Deren of Chabad Lubavitch of Greenwich. "It's not enough to create a strong and proud Jewish identity by harping on the fact that Hitler wanted to wipe us out. We need to appreciate the eternal strength of the Jewish people that came thousands of years before the Holocaust and will continue thousands of years after."
Deren called Kallman's memoir one of the most powerful books he has read in a long time.
"The beauty of Judith's book is to see that what it means to be a proud Jew is to defy those who seek to annihilate us by living a proud Jewish life despite the circumstances," Deren said.
At Temple Sholom, Rabbi Mitchell Hurvitz presented Kallman's book to her granddaughter during her June bat mitzvah at the conservative Jewish congregation and touched on its lessons in his sermon.
