What's in a name?

"Yes," she replied. "The day camps will soon be finished and the poor dears went through a few hard months and haven't been on a trip for a long time."

"You're right," I said, knowing that the two older children had been a bit neglected in the difficult months of pregnancy, and definitely deserved a pampering holiday before going back to school. "I'll try to find something for August," I told her, before going out with the children. "In the meantime, do us a favor and try to find a name for the baby."

Finding a name for an Arab child is hard work. We browse websites that suggest names, pore through Arab dictionaries and books of poetry - we even looked for appropriate names in the Koran, but all in vain. Every name was disqualified, one after the other. You have to make sure the name doesn't rhyme with a curse - which is almost impossible, because every name in Arabic has a rhyming curse, and even if it doesn't, that won't prevent other children from inventing curses without bothering about whether they rhyme. In the end, strong and threatening children are the only ones whose names don't rhyme with demeaning words and humiliating phrases.

We can't take a chance with this child, because he was born a preemie. Like his brother, it's likely the new child will enter a mixed education system, so we have to make sure to find an Arabic name that won't make things too hard for the teachers and the Jewish schoolchildren. It's not pleasant when your name gets mangled. Still, whatever you do, in the end they'll always call you Said.

In general, experience shows it's best to give an Arab child a universal name, one that doesn't sound like a suspicious object, a name that won't make security guards jump, or cause raised eyebrows when it's called out in Aroma. Most of the children who are in school with my kids were given Arab names such as Adam, Adi, Ram, Dani, Sami, Noor and Amir, and I'm talking here about the Muslims, because the Christians can also go for George, Peter, Michel, Chris and Michael.

On the one hand, we don't want to be thought to be making special efforts to be accepted, to assimilate, to integrate into the Israeli crowd. A little dignity, please; we'd like an Arab name with meaning that will undoubtedly affect his identity. But hey - am I really going to name my child Mustafa, Mohamed or Ibrahim? Won't that be an impediment on his path to finding a job, getting accepted to school or just going for a walk on the beach with pals?
