News in Brief: BAR publisher receives French honor

Thomas E. Horn, publisher of the Bay Area Reporter , received the Commander of the French National Order of Merit during a ceremony last week that was part of San Francisco's Bastille Day celebration.

The July 14 decoration of Horn, a high civilian honor, took place at a reception in the Green Room at the Veterans Memorial Building.

Horn is a longtime lover of French culture. He is the chairman of the San Francisco-Paris Sister City Committee.

"I greatly appreciate this honor bestowed by the president of France," Horn told the B.A.R. "French language and culture have long been personal passions. This passion has led down many interesting paths."

Brick campaign to raise funds for MCC-SF

Metropolitan Community Church-San Francisco is in the midst of a unique fundraising drive that leaders hope will end in a "yellow brick road" in front of the Eureka Street church.

The church is repaving the sidewalk in front of its building with personalized, engraved yellow bricks for its "Miracle on Eureka Street" fundraising campaign.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for LGBT people and allies to ensure their stories are written into MCC-SF, LGBT, and San Francisco history," senior provisional pastor the Reverend Dr. William H. Knight said in a statement.

The project was born of necessity: in April the city ordered the Castro church to fix the sidewalk after overgrown tree roots burst through and broke the concrete. The church decided to turn adversity into opportunity; hence the fundraising campaign.

Kristine Poggioli, a member of the MCC-SF board, told the B.A.R. that the fundraiser is for mandated city repairs but they are hoping for extra funds that can be used for other church repairs, operation, and its social justice programs.

The sidewalk repair, including trimming the tree roots, repairing the sewer lines, and the cost of ordering the bricks and paving, is estimated at $15,000, she said.

The bricks are available in a variety of sizes, with space available for engraving some text. A four-inch by eight-inch brick costs $250 (with one to three lines of text, 23 characters per line). Larger sizes are also available, ranging in cost from $500 to $5,000. Mini replicas of the purchased bricks are also available for $15 or $25. MCC-SF is a 501(c)3 organization; 100 percent of the donations qualify as a charitable contribution.
