Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is holding “Orchapella,” its first singing competition for a cappella music ensembles. The BSO invites area singers of all ages to submit a YouTube video of their group performing a song of their choosing for the chance to win the opportunity to open for Rockapella at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.
To participate, a cappella ensembles of 2-10 members must fill out a form at BSOmusic.org/orchapella , providing their contact information and a link to their video. Registration deadline is Tuesday, June 21. The BSO will select three semi-finalists and post their videos on the BSO’s facebook site beginning Tuesday, June 28, at 10 a.m. Fans can vote for their favorite video until voting closes at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5. The winning ensemble may be featured in additional pre-concert publicity.
The Strand Theater Company presents The 2011 Friends and Neighbors Festival: 20/20, through June 19 at 1823 N. Charles Street.
Seven new playwrights were selected from more than 100 entries for the festival. Each director has 20 hours of rehearsal time and a $20 budget. One play will be included in the Strand’s 2011-2012 season.

Aug. 14, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., s. Animal Enrichment Day, at Base Camp Discovery/ zoo grounds. Watch as the animals receive special treats, like “fishsicles” and papier maché toys, and zookeepers explain the importance of enrichment activities. Free with regular zoo admission.
