A Silicon Valley executive and convicted sex offender is facing civil as well as criminal charges on allegations that he used the Internet to lure a Canadian boy to the Peninsula and have a sexual encounter with him in a hotel room, attorneys said.
Scott McKibbin, director of global distribution at Sunnyvale-based Maxim Integrated Products, has been charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor for using the Web to convince a Vancouver boy, then 16, to hop on a plane and fly to San Francisco International Airport on Oct. 27, attorneys said.
McKibbin was arrested at the airport the next day after the boy's parents, who had begun looking for him, contacted police once they discovered their son's correspondence with the 40-year-old San Jose resident, said the boy's lawyer, Robert Allard.
The suit was filed in Santa Clara County court May 24, and the criminal charges came May 17.
When reached by phone Friday, McKibbin said "I would rather not comment" and hung up.
Officials at Maxim, a semiconductor company that has 9,200 employees and a 2010 revenue of $1.9 billion, didn't reply to requests for comment.
McKibbin has a previous felony conviction from Santa Cruz County for oral copulation with a minor that stems from a 1999 incident, according to court records. In that case, he lured a 14-year-old San Jose boy to Santa Cruz, gave him alcohol and had sexual relations with him, Allard said.
As a result of the conviction, he was ordered to register as a sex offender, according to court records.
The now-17-year-old Canadian boy, who has not been named because of his age, struck up a relationship with McKibbin in August 2010 on the Internet that included sexual conversations, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The boy agreed to fly to the Bay Area for an encounter, Wagstaffe added.
McKibbin allegedly paid for the travel arrangements and helped the boy get a passport.
Allard insists his client made the trip to visit a friend he had grown to trust.
"He was under a spell," said Allard, who claims the boy was sexually assaulted. "He didn't come here with the intention of doing anything sexual."
Wagstaffe said McKibbin has not been charged with molestation because prosecutors would not be able to prove that any sexual activity happened.
On the day of the flight, the boy left his parents a note saying he was going to swimming practice early. But they became suspicious and began digging through the boy's computer.
