There's a desk in one corner of the office although you can't see its surface it's piled high with books, paper, photos, correspondence. Also, an alarm clock, a pencil sharpener mounted to a block of wood in turn held to the desk by a C-clamp, a figurine of a peg-legged sailor, a couple of ULM license plates, and "» are those a pair of lava lamps? Next to the desk is a well-worn recliner, which is raised on a wooden platform, which itself is raised another 2 or 3 inches on casters. There's an old leather briefcase on the floor next to the desk. Across the room is another, then another, six briefcases in all. A Marine Corps "Semper Fi" bumper sticker is attached to Jones' mini-fridge (it's just below the "QUIT Yer Whining" sign). The fridge itself sits on a long countertop between the microwave and a bright red file cabinet. Jones served 4 years in the Marine Corps from 1949-1953. As a high school graduate in North Carolina, he aspired to play Class D baseball (he was a catcher), and he believed that he would get bigger and stronger with a stint in the armed forces. He joined the Marines and they promptly sent him to the Korean War, where he saw combat in repeated engagements and received two Purple Hearts. He's the original backpacker. In 1961, he preceded the college backpacking craze of the 1970s and '80s by a generation. From another corner of the office, he produces his packworn and faded with an American flag sewn on the top. It's startling to realize that this is the actual object that he shouldered around the world: England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East (where he got caught in a war and had to make a detour), Iran, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Vietnam (America's involvement there was in the early stages), Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, the South Pacific, and back home to North Carolina. He covered 50,000 miles, saw 22 countries and four continents. And he still has the pocket-journal he kept while traveling. He brings it out, lets you glance at the pages written 50 years ago. He reads an entry from Yugoslavia: "August 22. I'm awakened in a building at 4:30. I pack, go uptown, eat about nine sausages and bread for breakfast "» Make coffee outside army camp. When if introduced to American the boars were placed on farms and had controlled reproduction. Boars escaped these farms and started breeding in the wild, creating a large problem for farmers and their crops. Populations of 4 million boars cause an estimated $800 million in property damage per year. Natural predators range from large birds to wolves. These predators attack the piglets. Once the boar is past the piglet stage it goes to the top of the food chain in America. In other parts of the world tigers, pythons and leopards can take down an adult boar. Bears, humans, packs of wolves and panthers are known in the US to hunt boars. In the wild boars are known to eat rattlesnakes, birds, eggs, worms, and smaller animals dead or alive. Whitetail deer have to compete with the boars for nuts, mushrooms, and roots. Every state has there own rules and regulations on how many boars you can hunted and if you can do it on private or public land. Some countries like Norway pay farmers to kill wild boars. Feral boars are on the unprotected wild animals list and have no season in most states. They cause so much damage that they can be hunted in large numbers. Most states have made raising feral boars illegal and they can never be released into the wild. Wild boars have destroyed native plants and even small animal populations.
