Readers debate whether Gov. Rick Snyder is hypocritical for sending his ...

A talking point in recent months among those upset by Gov. Rick Snyder's K-12 funding plan is the tuition he pays for his youngest child to attend Greenhills School in Ann Arbor.

Greenhills' tuition is $18,225, and this month the school launched a fund-raising campaign, saying that tuition doesn't fully cover the costs of education in Greenhills.

By comparison, the average expenditure on a Michigan K-12 student in 2009-10 was about $9,600. The budget passed by the Legislature cuts that by about $270 a student for 2011-12

An mlive.com post on Friday raised the issue of whether Snyder is being hypocritical for paying big bucks for his daughter's schooling while insisting that a quality education is attainable at half that amount for Michigan public school students.

On the flip side of the argument is research that indicates funding is not highly correlated to educational quality.

Here's what readers had to say:

Little-Duckie : "My state representative - Jeff Farrington, sends his kids to a private school. Of course it was easy for him to vote to cut funding for my local school district. He is not a stakeholder. This year my son's school district will start the year with 100 fewer teachers. This in a district where the 5th grade class at my local elementary school had 36 kids in it. Snyder's daughter probably has 15 or so classmates in a school loaded with the extras including the arts. Yeah, it's all about "shared sacrifice". My kid is sacrificing and business owners are sharing the 1.8 billion tax break they got at the expense of schools."

federal12 :  "He sends his kids and pays for a Private School AND he pays taxes to the State of MI to support Public Schools that his kids will never use..Sounds like to me, when a person chooses to send their kids to a private school they are helping the Public Schools."

bucky's dad : "Give me a break. Snyder didn't invent the idea of sending a kid to a private school when one can afford to. That practice has been going on for centuries where education is concerned. It's really know one's business where he chooses to send his daughter as long as he's paying for it."

spartyalum : "It's the fact that he claims schools can function on less than $7,000 per year, yet he sends his daughter to a school that claims they can't function on $18,000 per year. Surely you have to see there's something wrong with this picture.

The addition's five-story section features 36 science labs and an atrium that looks up to the spherical classroom/planetarium, which is the building's most noteworthy characteristic. At night, the lit exterior of the planetarium will be seen from the west , from Oakwood Street and the adjacent parking lot.
