Curve Beat Up on Baysox

The Curve went scoreless in the first, but piled on the runs in the second and third innings off starter Wynn Pelzer. In the second, the Curve had two on with two down as Brad Chalk singled off his former teammate in the San Diego Padres organization, Pelzer, to tie the game at one. The next batter, Brock Holt , then tripled in Chalk and Kris Watts , clearing the bases and making it three runs in the inning. The Curve matched their run output from the second with three more in the third as they chased Pelzer from the game. Quincy Latimore led the inning off with a single and his hit was followed by four more in the inning. Jordy Mercer singled next, followed by a run-scoring single from Jeremy Farrell to make it 4-1. Eric Fryer then got in on the party with an RBI-single, one of his three hits on the day, to make it 5-1. Finally, Chalk grabbed his second RBI-single of the game, which sent Pelzer to the dugout and completed a second straight three-run inning for the Curve. Colla (3-1) settled down after allowing a run in the first inning and pitched four more scoreless innings to earn his third win of the season. Colla allowed five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. In relief of Colla, Tim Alderson pitched a scoreless inning, and Bryan Morris finished the game with three more scoreless innings, allowing one hit, one walk and three strikeouts. Since Morris worked the final three innings in the win, he earns his first career save.

Others: Luke Gregerson - Veteran reliever Heath Bell emerged as the team’s closer after Hoffman’s depature and did an excellent job saving games for a team that rarely won. He has a firm grip on the closer’s role going into 2010, both because of his talent and a lack of serious replacements. Luke Gregerson is a good young pitcher who performed well last season, and the team could possibly increase his role in the bullpen during 2010. Wynne Pelzer is an intriguing prospect from South Carolina who Baseball America speculates might eventually become the team’s closer (he is currently trying to develop as a starter).- link According to Newsday's Ken Davidoff, the Mets are interested in reliever Kiko Calero but are only willing to offer him a minor league contract. The Mets, along with baseball's other 29 teams, have real concerns about Calero's recent run of injuries. The 35-year-old unloaded an impressive 1.95 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 69/30 K/BB ratio in 60 innings for the Marlins last season, but he may have to settle for a minors deal and spring camp invite. - link 86. Wilmer Flores SS (Mets) 1.825 - Wilmer is an example of the more you see of a player the less impressed you become. No one doubts that he has a good bat, but that bat will not be playing shortstop. As his lower half thickens third base or the outfield will be the best position. He has yet to show the power everyone raves about, but he is still one of the younger players at the level he plays at.
