WILLOUGHBY: Where are the risk-takers?
WHERE has our entrepreneurial spirit gone?
Where has the modern-day Christopher Skase -- minus the conman element -- disappeared to?
This city, which was once the envy to many in Australia, is now at the mercy of all tiers of government, pleading for help.
We have gone from a city with balls where private enterprise set the agenda and hated governments, to one which now thinks it can't survive without funding from a premier or prime minister.
There was a day when this city was built on dreams and guts.
Risk-taking entrepreneurs and, yes, some from the white-shoe brigade, created legacies.
Sanctuary Cove, Bond University -- Australia's first private university -- Jupiters Casino, the monorail and giant water-themed parks were built on this fearless determination that helped put the Gold Coast on the map.
We had a bloke who developed the Broadbeach Hotel in the middle of what looked then like a desert and we even had Robin Loh who built his own suburb.
In more recent years, we have skyscrapers and Palazzo Versace.
We had a growing population and a buoyant tourism industry.
But this was all before the financial crisis.
This was before everyone lost faith in this wonderful city, destination and home.
Government funding is needed. The completion of all stages of the light rail is a prime example.
A new mayor and change of attitude in local council is also needed -- where is our Rudy Giuliani?
We need a figure on an international stage, not renowned for what he or she did before politics but what they will achieve in public office.
New leadership must open the doors to a new attitude to embrace this city, one built on arrogance, risk and creativity.
The Gold Coast has long been a town that hated government and embraced free enterprise. Until now.
Instead of pleading for handouts, we should instead be demanding that government get out of the way.
We should be threatening, with two elections in the midst, that if the red tape, the unnecessary charges and the can't or won't-do attitude isn't abolished, then the people in power will be.
Where is the entrepreneur running charter flights from Emerald to the Gold Coast Airport full of cashed-up miners, offering limos and beers on arrival?
Where is the private consortium offering to build a high-speed rail using Chinese expertise from Brisbane Airport to Coolangatta?
