Dad realizes his best gift is his girls

He’ll be in the showroom tomorrow, Father’s Day, making leather seats and sun roofs sound like recipes for happiness, even though, down deep, he knows better now.

“I love this business,” he said. “I like people. But when I hear them worrying about this, worrying about that, I want so much to tell them those aren’t the things that truly matter. But I guess none of us really understand that until something happens in our own little world.”

Jimmy was at work the day something happened in his little world.

It was a phone call from his older daughter, 39, the mother of his two grandsons, who had gone for a test after noticing a lump while showering.

“Dad,” she said, “the results came back and it’s malignant.”

Never at a loss for words, Jimmy, 60, fumbled for a reply.

“I told her, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll get the best doctors! I’m sure they caught it early enough and everything’s going to be fine.’ I was trying to be positive, trying to give her strength in place of fear, but when I hung up I felt destroyed.

“Whatever else I might have thought I wanted or needed that day, I suddenly realized all I really needed to make me happy was for my kids to be OK.”

Last week his younger daughter, 35, took him out for dinner.

“She kept asking, ‘Dad, are you going to be all right on Father’s Day?’ I told her I’d be fine, but I know I’ll have a hard time with it because, even though doctors tell us everything’s under control, I know there’s a time bomb ticking and, boy, does that change how you look at things.

“Now when I hear of parents who aren’t talking with their kids I want to tell them, ‘Don’t waste a day! Embrace them every day. Stay in their lives, because one day they might no longer be in yours.’ ”

Jimmy’s expecting a customer to stop by next week, a tradesman who’s hoping to trade his muscle car for a more practical pickup truck.

“He got the car three months ago; just had to have it! Now it’s sitting in his garage with 1,000 miles on it and he tells me, ‘I don’t know why I bought it.’ But it’s just a possession, and possessions can be replaced.

My daughters birthday is February 14th. She is very excited. She is turning 11. We are celebrating our birthday in a different state. We live in Florida, we are celebrating in in San Diego. We are going Thursday Feb. 11, (She said this vacation should be over because her Valentines Party at school was that next day, but there might be snow or something on the 12th, so it is on the 10th, the day before we leave and now she regrets it ) And we leave Tuesday, February 16th. She will miss 3 days of school, maybe 1 or 2 also, because of snow. We first of all need activities to do in San Diego. We plan driving down to L.A on that Friday night to spend Saturday there and go back to San Diego on Saturday night. We want to go to the beach, but is it cold? We need cheap activities. Any suggestions. We are there for about a week.

Here are her gifts: I saw a few comments stating that the cell phone and puppy are not a good gift for now because of her age.

About the cell phone, she will have unlimited texting, and I will be monitoring her texting, pictures, games etc. I will limit her games, her texting etc. She is responsible. I will be doing the monitoring for a few months. It is not like letting her have a Facebook or Twitter where she can be "attacked" on.

The Puppy. She has had smaller animals before, the average life- 3 years. She usually added 2 extra years. She has a love for animals soo. We have babysitted animals and dogs and this is a puggle. We think she will be very responsible. Yes, she will be taking the dog with her to both houses. Our custody is week by week.

EVERYTHING IS A SURPRISE!!! I think she will be happy with herself. Do not call me a spoiled person, please. When your parents are divorced, you sometimes have more advantages and some people dont.

thats cute she is getting a puppy. Does she know she is getting a puppy, or is it a surprise? That will probably make her forget about the valentines party at school. I think your getting her some pretty good gifts!!!! what about browsing around at stores and getting all dolled up? that could be fun. do some sight seeing. google some stuff to do around there. a fun thing to do n L.A is to go to the L.A.X airport there is a what a burgar there and u can eat outside and watch the airplanes land. there is also a park across the street were she can run around( it is not the playground type park). it is cold in the water i go there with my fam ev summer and the water is usually 50 degrees F. i think n san deiago there is a seaworld.
