Gone Gardenin' - Create a living wreath

We are always excited and feel challenged when we create something new or different for the gardens. One of the things that keeps gardeners interested and motivated is that we always have some experiment that we are conducting, some new plant that we are trying, or a new way of doing a task that we have not used before.

One thing that gardeners around Minnedosa -- and in several other areas as well -- will be trying this growing season is to make and grow a living wreath. This is all due to Gwen Beam and her accomplice, Tina Kilmury, giving talks/demonstrations throughout the region on this very topic. I will share what I learned from her presentation.

Start with a 14-inch wire wreath frame and fasten a strong wire hook securely to the frame -- perhaps tie a bright piece of ribbon to the hook because Gwen says she can never find the darn hook after she has finished making the wreath! Then you will need to get some green sheet moss (sphagnum moss), available at large garden centres.

To make the wreath, lay sheets of moss that are about 2 1/2 times the width of the frame, green side down, in a circle. Place the wire wreath frame, face down, on top of the moss.

You will need some good soil, which has been thoroughly dampened -- Gwen uses soilless mix with some Sea Soil added. Fill the frame by heaping the soil up on top of the frame. Now gather the moss up to cover the soil and the frame.

This task is a lot easier if you have a helper. Tie the moss with wire -- Gwen uses 22 gauge -- by wrapping the wire securely around and around the wreath at 2-3 centimetre intervals, and if any soil starts leaking out from a certain spot, simply add a piece of moss and wrap wire around it to plug the hole.

After the wreath is wired and the moss-covered soil is securely held in place -- hold the wreath up to ensure that this is so -- it is time to add the plants. Do all of this on a piece of plywood or other board to make it easier to work with the materials.

At the demonstration that I saw, Gwen used succulents, most of them hardy ones, but she stated that you could use other plants, such as small flowered petunias, herbs -- Gwen adds brightly coloured violas here and there to add some interest, or impatiens. Sedums, such as stonecrop, or ivy would be other choices.

A sharp stick or awl is handy to make planting holes in the moss for the cuttings/plants. If you are using potted plants, you may have to remove some of the soil from their roots as you do not want to make the planting holes too big.
