Lee Baseball Drops To Losers's Bracket In NAIA World Series

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lee baseball Flames watched what appeared to be a sure NAIA World Series victory slip away in the bottom of the ninth inning and will now be forced to regroup and battle back through the loser’s bracket starting Saturday morning (11:30 EDT) against SSAC rival Faulkner University.

Lee ace Shay Crawford sailed through eight innings, striking out 15 LSU-Shreveport hitters and the Flames held what looked like a convincing 4-1 advantage. Crawford hit the Pilot’s lead-off man to open the bottom of the ninth. He was lifted from the mound after throwing 126 pitches, and allowing only four hits.

Three relief pitchers later, who issued five bases-on-balls and allowed only one hit, the Pilots pinned a stunning 5-4 loss on the Flames.

“I told the team before the game that it took 27 outs to win and we came up short,” said coach Mark Brew after one of the most frustrating losses of his young and highly-successful career. “Shay (Crawford) pitched a tremendous game and we thought we had the bullpen that could seal the victory. We also knew LSU-Shreveport was a tough team that was not going to quit.”

The Flames opened the game with a solo run in the top of the first. Jonathan Clark, who finished the day with two hits and drove in another, started the inning with a single. He stole second and scored on a single by Chris Grayson who posted one of his two RBIs and also had a pair of hits.

Lee waited until the sixth to score again against LSUS right-hander Justin Montensen. Clark walked and was sacrificed to second by Joe Ramirez. Grayson came through again with his second hit and RBI.

The Pilots made it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the sixth when Curtis Beaudoin drilled a homer over the left-centerfield wall. The margin reached 4-1 in the seventh and eighth innings. Logan Bowers, pinch-running for catcher Travis Anderson, tallied the initial run after Henderson and Seth Walker had singled. Michael Brown put what looked a punctuation mark on the sure win with a solo blast in the eighth.

The nightmare started for the Flames in the bottom of the ninth and it will live in the hearts of the Lee coaching staff, players and fans for years to come. Crawford hit lead-off man Kevin Smith with an inside pitch. Brew immediately went to his bullpen and brought in closer Kris Hall.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not just that Leicester City are stealing one of our better players it is also Grayson has an attraction to players who don’t perform, whether that is in signings or keeping the qualityless. When the manager spends half a day saying the completely useless Billy Paynter is staying come what may but the vital goalie can go “in the clubs interest” you can only start to despair. We know, because the last 2 close seasons have shown this. Grayson will sign a load of players and only one will be any good. We also know that every decent player we have is for sale. Schmeichel has nothing to do with contract length; it is about maximising income in before our “new” owner becomes our old owner (with a bit of luck). Kilkenny (going to Hull City?) and Johnson (Norwich City?) getting bosmans is about saving wages, Snodgrass leaving for the PL is about maximising his value, it’s not if but who to and how much? With Gradel, top of West Ham United, Swansea City and Fulham’s shopping list, its can the club treble or more its money and with Howson it will be about persuading him to leave (for a good PL club like West Bromwich Albion one hopes) as he has the same 1 year as the Dane left on his contract. That just leaves Becchio and given how Grayson seems intent on bigging up Paynter as his front man (“he showed his quality”, really) we can only assume he could be going also! . Equally let us not spend time thinking Bowyer, Smith and Woodgate (from Birmingham City, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur) as regardless of what you think of each one of them, there lies madness. We can only try and forward plan on what we have (except of course in the goalkeeper position where we are literally without) and that includes players Grayson has long decided he doesn’t need but length of contract and the fact such players won’t ever get an offer higher than L1 means they stay! Suicidal yet, why not? So let’s see how it pans out starting with A.N.Other in goal. Our defence will be interesting, it is Connolly or no-one at right-back, perm any two from five in central defence, one crock (Kisnorbo), one oldie with declining form (O’Brien) two dropped (Bruce and Bromby) and one up and coming yet to play for us (Lees). At left back we can choose between a confidence shattered Bessone, a Parker who wonders where his next game is coming from or a would rather play midfield White!
