Rain Brings Varying Conditions

LANGDON, Mo. (DTN) - Both of DTN's View From the Cab farmers received about 2 inches of rain last week. For Tom Tibbits of Minneapolis, Kan., precipitation meant taking the Memorial Day weekend off. But for rain-drenched David Brandt of Carroll, Ohio, 2 inches is just a drop in the bucket. David spent his holiday planting.

"We started planting corn and soybeans yesterday (Saturday) at noon," David told DTN on Sunday. "We got a good start on it." At the end of the day on Sunday his corn plantings totaled about 145 acres. The Brandts have also been running the grain drill to seed 90 acres of soybeans, mostly into standing rye.

Springtime farm workloads are like the weather, when it rains it pours, because in addition to planting, the Brandts mowed 20 acres of hay on Saturday.

David said soil conditions were still "plenty wet." There were plenty of wet holes to go around, but overall planting conditions were better than any he's seen so far this spring. If rain holds off, he anticipates that will continue to get better as the week progresses for a positive end to the planting season. "Hopefully by Thursday or Friday we'll have things wrapped up," he said.

Soybeans planted on the farm two weeks ago are emerging. The 75 acres of early corn planted into winter peas and radishes is about 7 inches tall. Its dark green color shows that nitrogen uptake has begun. Nitrogen loss on saturated soils is always a concern. David told DTN that the color of his corn and scattered clumps of volunteer wheat indicate nitrogen placed in soil from the air by cover-crop peas is still there. Later this week he plans to take soil samples to determine just how much N remains in his fields. Those samples will be sent to Ohio State University where Dr Rafiq Islam is conducting research into the way David feeds his fields. Results should be available within a couple of days, telling David how much supplemental N to apply.

The wheat crop is maturing. "Wheat looks really good. It's some of the longest-headed wheat I've had," David said. Water holes in fields look "pretty pathetic," but overall David is satisfied with his prospects. Harvest is still a month or so away, probably around the first or second of July. That may be earlier than usual and require supplemental drying. With no "weed and feed" on this year's crop, thistles and giant ragweed are beginning to poke through the crop canopy. He'll combine as soon as he can to get the upper hand on crop competitors. "We'll cut it wet and run it through the dryer," he said.

Looking to make an upgrade to a deere no till drill from my conventional jd 8300. i will be drilling soybeans and wheat into corn and bean stubble.
