When we hear about them, we always let you know about local high school fundraisers and events.  This one is special.  Poly Boys' Golf is having the annual Poly Golf Tournament on Thursday, June 23, at the Navy Golf Course, and they will be honoring Poly legends Anne Wallace McAndrews and Sam Dimas.

Below the event information is the obituary for the late Wallace McAndrews, written by her brother Don Wallace, a Poly grad and author.  Come back to GazettesSports.com early next week to read more about Wallace McAndrews and more ways you can help the fund.

Writer, teacher, golfer, and mother, Anne Wallace (McAndrews) passed away on February 9, 2008 surrounded by her loving family, from cancer. A gifted writer of fiction and non-fiction on subjects ranging from golf to surfing to single motherhood, Anne’s work appeared in Redbook, the Los Angeles Times Magazine, Golf for Women, Golf Digest and many other publications. She was born on September 13, 1953 in Long Beach, and attended Longfellow Elementary, Hughes Junior High and Poly High School, where she was president of the Latin Club, appeared on stage in theatrical productions, made experimental short films, and petitioned the CIF for the right to play on the boy’s golf team.

Anne was a lifelong hiker who spent weeks on the John Muir Trail, an enthusiastic surfer, and a talented junior golfer, playing out of the Virginia Country Club (where she holds many club records); in junior tournaments around the state, she often was in contention with friends and future LPGA stars Amy Alcott and Laura Baugh. When her CIF petition was turned down, Anne’s father, Donald C. Wallace, Jr., filed suit on behalf of Anne, sister Nancy, Baugh, and others which was continued by other lawyers after Anne’s high school graduation and was part of the movement that led to the 1972 passage of Title IX, the Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.

Anne went on to attend Occidental College and graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in film, reviving her golf career in her late twenties with great flair, including a victory at the Los Angeles Amateur Open when she was six months pregnant. By then a teacher in the Long Beach Unified School District, Anne worked at Poly and Jordan, among other campuses, where she made many friends and left a lasting impression of wit, optimism, and generosity; she also successfully fought off terminal cancer in 1988 thanks to innovative treatment supervised by Dr. Thomas Calcaterra at the UCLA Cancer Center.
