Shooting gallery catches fire in Nutley

A driver pulled into the Nutley municipal parking lot on Park Avenue after noticing the shooting gallery booth on fire, according to Nutley Lt. Thomas Nicolette. The driver then disconnected the trailer from the truck.

"The trailer was lined with carpet, had some plastics in it, light fixtures and prizes, and those stuffed animals can burn very fast," Nicolette said. The trailer contained no power sources. The fire could have been sparked by a cigarette or ash blowing up from the road, he added.

The damage was primarily cosmetic, and no injuries were reported.

The fire department got the call at 8:52 a.m., and the firefighters extinguished the fire about 10 minutes after their arrival, Nicolette said. Cleanup was complete about 9:30 a.m.

Fire officials were not aware where the game was heading.

North Jersey Fire Photography: Blasts From The Past-Part 1: Nutley

These photos come from April of 1993 during Fire Week at the Nutley Fire Dept headquarters, at which point the paid members of the department would display the apparatus and put on an exhibition featuring the equipment. The engine in the first photo is a hybrid between Mack and Ward LaFrance and was purchased by the department in 1989 for Engine Co. 4. At that point Engine 4 had been running a 1963 Mack CF for over 20 years. The rig served Engine 4 until 2009 when it was shifted into reserve status. It contains a 1,000 gallon tank with a gpm capacity of 1250. It's workhorse status assures that it is more than capable to step into front line service, it's most recent stint was during February and March of this year. The other piece of apparatus in the following photos is a 1978 Mack Pirsch aerial ladder assigned to Truck Co. 1 from 1978 to 1998. In it's later years problems with the aerial necessitated it's replacement with a 1998 E-One. These photos are representative of the lime green Mack rigs that Nutley ran almost exclusively from 1978 until 1998.
