A healthy obsession with restoration
He finished the LeMans restoration in 1981. He first showed at local shows, like the Southwestern Michigan Car Collector's show in Berrien Springs. At the urging of the late car collector and friend Bernie Kremer, Dale began showing his LeMans in Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) shows around the country. Over time the restored Pontiac had won an AACA 1st Junior, Senior, 1st Grand National and finally the Senior Grand National awards. In other words, the LeMans was almost perfect. He does not have equipment to do all aspects of a restoration. He totally dismantles a car, cleans and paints the frame, replaces the glass, details the entire area under the hood and the interior and then reassembles the vehicle. But he has help with exterior body painting, installing new chrome, bending exhaust pipes, installing new covers for the seat and having the engine rebuilt. The Muellers have owned a number of impressive cars over the years. With specimens like a 1967 Pontiac Firebird convertible, 1969 Camaro SS hardtop, 1969 Camaro Z-28 Cowl Induction hardtop, 1966 Mustang 289 hardtop, 1968 Mustang Sprint and 1971 Camaro Z-28 once part of their collection, it's obvious pony and muscle cars are their favored wheels to ride. I have a favor to ask of readers. A new Chevy Camaro coupe is being sought for the Krasl Concours. If you or someone you know owns a new Camaro and would like to be a participant in the Aug. 13 event celebrating Chevy's centennial, please contact me via email or phone (983-0742). Any color will do, but I'm especially interested in one of those Synergy Green or Rally Yellow jobs. The car will be displayed in Lake Bluff Park and shown in the popular Pass in Review event at noon. In addition to the award-winning '71 LeMans and GTO, they enjoy a 1984 Chevy Monte Carlo SS (305-cubic-inch V-8) and a 1969 Chevy Chevelle SS 396. Purchasing and then restoring and showing a car like the '71 GTO is not an inexpensive hobby.
1966-1967 impala? - 1968 Chevelle
I was thinkin about restoring a 66-67 impala as a driver , i was wondering on how it handles and how it drives. i know its a big car but is there anything you can do to greatly improve handling. i just dont want it to be like a tractor tailor and have to turn every corner wide. (id like to ask these questions for a 66-72 chevelle and 68-72 nova as well)?
best thing for any car to handle better is stiffer springs stablizers and frame, for road use the car isnt it’s self that bad, though it is a boat, as a daily driver just put on a good suspension kit good brand tires and if you want that little extra touch camber the wheels (this assuming since a restoration aint cheap, you have the cash to spare) you cant really do that much to such a long frame and you’ll have to get a good balance (frame stiffness for drivability) because if you go overboard you’re going to kill the tires as for the chevelle and nova, same advice, but it’s a shorter frame and you can get that perfect balance easier. (this is if you’re going modern look, personally i’d keep it as stock as possible, looser suspension so you can get that ass end out on the corner)
You won’t have to turn it like a truck. But it is a longer wheelbase than modern cars, or the Nova or Chevelle, so it’ll turn different, no matter what you do to it, unless you want to shorten it, which would be dumb. They’re OK to drive, you’d like it. The long wheelbase makes it handle bumps better than a shorter car, and they turn just fine.
The ’66-’67 Impala is a fairly sharp handling car for it’s size. Good weight distribution and balance. It is built for the freeway. Very comfortable and set up right, very fast. There are tons of aftermarket goodies you can obtain. Prices are reasonable also, it was a popular ride in the day. Here are a few links to search through for ideas.
I’ve owned and driven all those cars. 66 Caprice and Impala, 67 and 68 Chevelle, and 69, 70, and 72 Nova. The 66 Impala is the best riding car of the group and the Nova is the best handeling. Of all the ones I had, I’d like to have my 68 Chevelle again. It was a good compromise of ride and handeling. Chevelles are easy to get parts for and easy to find. Also consider a 70-72 Monte Carlo. 4 inch longer wheel base and a better ride than a Chevelle but cheaper to buy and restore. Uses many Chevelle parts so it’s easy to restore, too.
