Academic arrangement lecturers wear black arm band in colleges ...
Srinagar, June 20: The lecturers working on academic arrangements across the Valley today kick started their week long protest programme against the Governments failure to fulfill their genuine demands including restoration of previous nomenclature as contractuals and increase in monthly remuneration.
The lecturers have decided to go on indefinite strike and boycott classes from June 27 if the Government failed to redress their grievances.
Early morning, the lecturers staged a sit-in outside the Principals chambers in all the colleges across Kashmir, All Jammu and Kashmir College Contractual Teachers Association president, Fayaz Ahmad told Greater Kashmir, adding the lecturers later resumed the work and wore black arm bands to registered their protest against the Government indifference.
Fayaz Ahmad said, The protest was an attempt to highlight our demands without affecting the functioning of colleges. The lecturers worked throughout the day and on inquiry about the black arm bands from the students and others, revealed the injustice done to them.
Fayaz said that if Government failed to act before June 27, the lecturers would go for strike and the onus would lie on the authorities.
Till 2008 we were designated as contractuals, but the Government changed the nomenclature to academic arrangement lecturers and teaching assistants. Consequentially, we did not fall under the special provisions Act of 2010 that calls for regularization of adhoc and contractual workers employed for seven years, Fayaz said.
He said the lecturers were overburdened due to the revised workload recently issued by the Government. As per the University Grants Commission norms, we have to give only four classes per day, but in most of the cases we have to attend at least six classes, he said.
He said 1100 lecturers were not employed this year due to the change in the norms.
About the salary hike, Fayaz said: The academic arrangement lecturers are paid Rs 12000 per month and the teaching assistant get Rs 8000. This is against the UGC regulation according to which we must get the basic pay of a permanent lecturer. Accordingly our salaries shall be Rs 15000 and Rs 21000 respectively.
