'One Leg Greg' of Joliet hopes to reach Paralympics
JOLIET — Despite losing a leg, Greg Beene has regained a confidence and determination that is putting him on a pathway to international glory.
Beene, 34, is seeking to represent the United States as a cyclist for the Paralympic Games in London in 2012. His website name exemplifies his ability to joke about his circumstance, oneleggreg.com.
Now Beene, of Joliet, tells his story to others who have lost the use of their legs or arms as a way to inspire them to continue striving toward their goals.
Beene’s life nearly ended on Aug. 12, 2003. The weather that day was sunny and warm and he was riding a high-performance 1300cc motorcycle and teaching a co-worker how to ride while they both were cruising on Bluff Street in Bicentennial Park. Beene was traveling at about 35 to 45 mph, he said.
Beene had been riding dirt bikes since he was 10 but didn’t let his parents, Meridith and George, know until he was 15.
Shattered pelvis
Racing was something Beene enjoyed, and he would go to the Route 66 Dragway and race on the quarter-mile track.
His motorcycle experience included attending a racing school, where he was taught how to fall.
Such knowledge proved handy that day. Beene, who checked how his co-worker was doing, took his eyes off the road for a second. Bluff had a slight curve, and Beene suddenly saw a truck coming in his path.
Beene had learned how to drop his bike and push it. He did so in order for it to avoid the children who filled the park, and he started to roll.
As he rolled, his body slammed into a concrete base of a light pole. Had Beene not been wearing a helmet, he would’ve died instantly. Instead, his lower body took the brunt of the collision. Beene’s pelvis was shattered, as well as the ball and socket to his right leg. He was still conscious.
“I heard a little girl say, ‘He’s bleeding,’” Beene recalled.
An ambulance took Beene to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center. While en route, a paramedic said that Beene suffered “temporary paralysis.”
Life or limb
From St. Joe’s, a helicopter airlifted Beene to the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. While in the air, Beene lost consciousness.
