Anson honored

At the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation's 25th annual meeting Monday, Richard F. Anson received the George B. Weaver Jr. Footprints Award. Established in 2002, the award is presented to those who have left footprints for others in the area of philanthropy and service.

The foundation prepares a video about the recipient's accomplishment with spoken clips from those who know the person or his works. The video is played before the actual award is given.

The picture of Anson that emerged from the video was a man of quiet and unassuming philanthropy and service.

Marti Webster, his bookkeeper for more than 30 years, explained that Anson established a New York State registered apprenticeship program at his company. Anson's company was one of the few private companies in Chautauqua County that had such a program. Anson was fulfilled because he could provide jobs and opportunities to people from his own home area.

Hugh Graves, Anson's employee at Lakeside Precision, and one of the first to complete the apprenticeship program and receive a journeyman's certificate, simply congratulated Anson and assured him he was deserving of the award.

Gary Mrowka told of the Anson's work with a prison ministry. He called Anson "a man of faith" and spoke of "his commitment to daily mass."

Doug Manley said Anson represented the old adage, "If you want to get something done, call on the busiest person."

Carter Rowland spoke of his "unpretentious manner" saying Anson is "not flamboyant" and "very modest."

Reverend Thomas Wopperer spoke of the many times Anson was generous to his church with time and his resources, and characterized his behavior as "Christian stewardship."

Richard Johnson said that Anson "shared his time and his success." and had "a quiet but active role" in the community.

Often it is difficult to know a quiet man, but his friends and colleagues managed to inject humor into their remembrances, to create laughter from the audience and to help everyone understand Anson a little better.

Webster recalled that Anson had served her "my first Manhattan." Mrowka thanked Anson for teaching his wife to make czarnina (Polish duck soup). Rowland said Anson was a man who preferred sardines to fillet mignon. Wopperer asked Anson to keep the soup coming. Manley revealed that Anson was a member of a ping-pong group and a great competitor.

In a fashion keeping with the portrait the video created, Anson spoke briefly and modestly putting the foundation first.

So we built a database and started developing a website. After a few weeks, it became clear that we wanted a subscription model and so we needed a sales person. On February 29, I introduced the concept to another friend, Graham, and he immediately came onboard. We spent March and April working on the product, officially launching the site on May 3.
