Breeding question: Planning ahead?
Okay, as most of you know I plan on breeding Twidge, my border collie , in a year or two. She is only 11 months old right now, so haven’t got a chance to OFA yet, but parents were excellent and fair and elbows normal. He dad is CEA/CH, CL, TNS clear as is mom.
I have been picking out names for my keeper puppy , a female who will be named Nifty, and I have started a waiting list. I have already found a stud for Twidge who is an AKC champion and has titles. He compliments her quit nicely too. He is very high drive and has a “hard” type temperament which is what I want in a keeper pup.
I have a contract written and have decided I want all show quality puppies to be shown in conformation and pet and performance pups shown in companion, working, and performance events. I will be giving puppies to people I know and I know will show the puppies.
So, I have been told planning all of this stuff this early is good by half of my mentors and could wait by the other half (I have 6 mentors). What is your opinion? Is there anything else I can do to make this the best first BC litter? answers:
I don’t think there is anything wrong with breeding dogs as long as you don’t do it too many times. I am a breeder too. I breed pitbulls, not for shows, but I breed them for people I know for protection or just companion dogs. The female dog I have now, named Lady, I bred only one time, and it hurt her so I am never doing that again. I kept a male pup from her. I named him Buster. They are good dogs. I think if you are breeding them for show, then it is good to plan this far ahead. I didn’t plan for more than a few months for mine, but maybe I should have. It is also good to have a vet check out any dog you have that are going to breed so they can determine if it is able to have pups without harming the dog. Other than that, I think you are doing a great job.
One thing though, I think it is fine that you are breeding, but also there are dogs and cats in shelters that need homes. If you could just adopt one, that would help. I adopted a dog and a cat from the shelter this year. I’m not trying to preach to you though. ^_^ Just get one if you can.
