Workouts suffer in crunch for time
It's hard to stick with a fitness regimen, even when starting with the best of intentions.
Midway through the Healthy Family Project, Deborah Reef and her family talked about having problems finding time for fitness in their schedules.
“I am cognizant about walking — parking my car farther if I go to the grocery store and things like that,” Reef, 53, said on May 4. “But really putting a lot of effort into it? I haven't.”
Likewise, her fiance, Alex Danson, said teaching piano lessons and playing music at local restaurants and clubs late at night affected his ability to work out.
“I don't have time to exercise,” he said last month.
Because she cannot leave her 9-year-old son, Noah, unattended in the morning to go for a brisk walk before work, Reef asked for a treadmill for Mother's Day.
Later in the month, Reef was asked again to assess their commitment to daily fitness.
The treadmill had not arrived, but she did buy two Hula Hoops for her and Noah to use at home. Reef reported that she and Noah were using them for about 15 minutes a day — and having fun at it.
“They say 10 minutes with a hula hoop burns 400 calories,” Reef said. “I'm moving in the right direction, but I'm still not where I want to be.”
Meanwhile, her older son, 25-year-old Josh, struggled with consistency. He ran every day in April, according to the journal he kept in his phone. But workouts subsided when he got busy with work.
“The key is to schedule a time every day and just do it. You say, ‘From 8 to 9, this is what I'm going to do,'” he added.
