Fiddlers find friends back home (6/17)

The GreelySavoy Duo’s performance at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd’s Summer Music Festival will mark a return to Lake Charles for both of the established Cajun acoustic fiddlers — but their previous appearances were in vastly different ensembles and even musical genres.

David Greely of Breaux Bridge and Joel Savoy of Eunice will appear at the church, 715 Kirkman St., at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 21. Tickets are $10 in advance at the church office or at the door.

Both have appeared in McNeese State University’s Banners Series — Greely as a member of Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys in 2009 and Savoy with his mother’s band, Ann Savoy & Her Sleepless Knights, in March.

The duo’s Good Shepherd performance is billed as “Fiddle-dee-dee Louisiana style.”

Greely, as the founding fiddle player of the Mamou Playboys, has had a 40-year career of traditional Cajun dance hall and concert music. Savoy grew up in the Savoy Family Band with his mom, dad Marc and brother Wilson.

Greely and Savoy have come together in the simplest tradition of Louisiana French musical heritage, “kitchen music.”

The inter-generational pair have no planned program of tunes for the concert and say they will play what they feel, much as a couple of musicians who meet by chance at a home and start with “Have you heard this one?” or “How about this?” or “Remember when so-and-so played this?”

In fact, that’s much the way the GreelySavoy Duo got its start.

“Young people in Lafayette have parties, and the parties usually include music,” Greely said in a telephone interview. At some of the parties, only French is spoken.

“Joel and I met and started playing together at some of these parties and discovered that we understood each other musically.”

They each bring to the duo a rich background in Cajun music and combine to present the audience with the works of pioneers in the genre as well as their own updated take on the historical roots.

“To make it as a Cajun fiddle player around Lafayette, you have to do something that’s different from what everybody else is doing,” he said.

“I have some really old tunes from the original Louisiana musicians like Dennis McGee (1893-1989), and we play them, and then we’ll add companion pieces of our own composition,” Greely said. “The arrangements can be pretty complex.
