Benefit set for paralyzed man displaced by Joliet home fire

The Wheels 4 Goose funding-raising event will be 2-8 p.m. Saturday at Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm, 17250 Weber Road in Crest Hill. Jaworski, Denise’s sister, thought of the idea for the event and established a committee, Bob and Denise Goss said Monday.
JOLIET — Lightning struck and started a fire at a Joliet home earlier this month, displacing the family of Bob Goss, who is paralyzed from the waist down as a result of complications from back surgery.
Before the June 4 lightning strike, the family was preparing for this weekend’s fund-raising event, Wheels 4 Goose.
The event will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm in Crest Hill. It will help Bob, whose nickname is Goose, purchase a vehicle he can operate, lessening his dependence on others for transportation to and from therapy.
You might have read about this fundraising event in Sports Editor Dick Goss’ column in the June 5 Herald-News. Dick is Bob’s cousin.
In that very same June 5 edition, there was a story about a lightning strike and fire the previous afternoon on Calico Court in Joliet.
That was Bob’s house.
No newspaper editor could have planned for such a coincidence. And no family could have foreseen the string of hardships Bob has faced in the past 15 months.
Difficult adjustment
Bob and his wife, Denise, have lived at their Joliet home for 16 years. They have two children, Creighton, 20, and Katie, 17.
In March 2010, Bob was paralyzed as a result of unexpected complications from back surgery. As Bob continues therapy, the process has been difficult for him and his family.
“Your life takes a 180-degree turn,” Bob said Monday.
“It’s been hard for our kids, too, but we’re a strong family, and we’ll figure it out, and we’ll get through,” Denise said.
“We’ve gotten through the hard part,” Bob added.
“You have to find laughter throughout the day, or else you cry,” Denise said.
