June 15--BECKLEY -- Armed with a new survey of health care employment in the state, West Virginia's community colleges can now identify where they should direct a new health care workforce.

"A majority (64 percent) of the employers indicated there is a shortage of qualified job applicants in the health care industry, and they expect that shortage to continue over the next three to five years," the report states. "The majority of the employers across the state noted that the applicants they are seeing apply simply do not have the skills for the jobs, or there are not enough applicants applying, or the applicants do not have the work ethic needed."

According to an executive summary of the survey, program areas in fields currently in demand and paying a "living wage" are occupational therapy aides/assistants, physical therapy aides/assistants, respiratory therapy assistants and jobs in health information technology. Nursing programs, the area in highest demand, the survey found, are already served.

The survey also found a high demand for home health/personal care aides but states those jobs require little or no training for hire and do not pay a living wage.

"The council will use the report to provide the skill upgrades necessary for current employees and target funding for new programs," said James Skidmore, chancellor of the West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education. "The council is committed to preparing skilled employees needed by health care providers by staying abreast of the changing skills sets and identifying emerging occupations in the industry."

The report, a partnership with the Governor's Office of Health Enhancement and Lifestyle Planning, also suggests West Virginia community colleges examine medical office management programs. The demand in medical office management, like much of medicine, is moving toward consolidation.
