Big men will stop throwing opponents to the ground, says Darren Jolly

The issue came alive after Sydney's Mumford, Geelong's Joel Corey and St Kilda's Justin Koschitzke were all reported on the weekend for throwing opponents to the ground.

Corey was let off with a reprimand after pleading guilty to rough conduct in an incident that left opponent Jack Steven uninjured.

Mumford and Koschitzke both received two weeks after their opponents were hurt in the tackles.

Mitch Duncan, who was tackled by the St Kilda forward, was left dazed after his head hit the ground.

David Ellard, who was tackled by Mumford, was left with concussion and had to be taken to hospital for observation.

Scott said he thought that what would previously have been lauded as a good tackle was now illegal, but that it depended on what happened to the opposition player.

Jolly thought that big men would stop throwing their opponents to the ground now, but suggested Mumford was unlucky.

"It was probably a little bit stiff in the end, given that it's the way he plays," Jolly said.

"He's a big guy, he's aggressive and certainly if you get a little guy wrapped up, you really want to drive him into the ground and I suppose you can't any more.

"He's probably copped the big brunt of that.

"Players who are in that instance from now on are certainly going to have it in the back of their mind. They'll be thinking about not slinging players to the ground because the consequences are quite high.

"That's something the AFL are trying to stamp out, so players who are in the position when they can sling a player to the ground, they will probably pull back and not do it."

Last month, Melbourne's Jack Trengove received a three-match ban for a similar tackle after which his opponent was subbed out of the game with concussion.

Cats coach Scott is perplexed by the interpretation of the rule.

"I'm a little bit worried because our job is to make sure that we're really clear in our instructions and that the players understand the rules and we understand the rules," Scott said.

"It's clear that if you hurt someone these days you're potentially liable. We need to go back and have a look at these incidents in detail and be really clear about what you can and can't do.

"Obviously, there's a grey area around that. Players aren't deliberately trying to drive a player's head into the ground.

"But if you do that you are liable for the outcome. We've got to do our best to understand the rules and coach accordingly.

How to Stop Your Cats from Throwing Up on Your Carpets CoastViews ...

By Gwen O’Neill

We adopted Wuzzy and Fuzzy several years ago. I take no responsibility for the names. They were already adult cats so we decided not to confuse them with new names. They both like to eat plastic, the gray cat likes to eat holes in our clothes and they were vomiting several times a week on the carpets.

We had been told the eating disorder is probably a result of early weaning but now that we are in a home with beige carpets, its has been an increasing frustration to be constantly cleaning up spots.
