There are many things I enjoy about summer travel with my family and friends.

Whether we are journeying as close as Dollywood, or as far away as another continent, there are always some intrinsic joys to traveling.

For example, no matter what, I somehow end up with the camera and am charged with the all-important duty of capturing memories… Like the time my family, one of my best friends and I were so exhausted from a week spent at my childhood home in California that, instead of enjoying the sunny beach together, we instead opted to separate and catch up on our sorely missed R.E.M. sleep — on the beach, in the car, at the house, while sightseeing...

Or the time another of my friends and her family found themselves in a bilingual bickering match with a Spanish waiter because they wanted to order glasses of water, yet did not know the Spanish words to do so.

I cherish these memories — and the humorous pictures. I cannot help but love to travel. While TSA screenings and long car rides irritate some, I love the worldliness of airports and the feeling of possibility when sitting behind a map and a wheel.

I love to plan these trips, from researching the towns we will visit, to talking to people who have been there before and hearing their own experiences. I like finding things off the beaten track, finding ways to submerge my fellow travelers and myself into a new world.

Even if our “travels” take us mere steps from our own backyard, I still love the feeling of the emotional journey, transporting from one reality to another while sharing the experience with the people I love.

Take, for example, the most recent Sundown in the City. Granted, most of my friends and I have lived in Knoxville for the majority of our lives, but some of the Farragut dwellers, for some reason, had never been to such places as Market Square, Gay Street, or the Old City.

Thus, we walked around all of my favorite downtown places — the stores on Market Square, the theaters, eating late night gelato under the beautiful summer sky. Even though we were never more than a few miles from home, it felt like Knoxville had taken on a new identity, as if we had somehow traveled somewhere new and unexpected.

And I guess that is what summer vacation is all about. It is not about traveling to far off and exotic locations on expensive trips. It is about seeing the world through new eyes and old friends.
